Joss Whedon Wants Downey Jr. to Play Iron Man Forever; Talks About Thanos in 'The Avengers 2'

The Avengers

Robert Downey Jr. has been musing about stepping away from Iron Man and letting other actors take a crack at the character, but if Joss Whedon has any say in the matter, he would rather have Downey play Iron Man forever.

"I want him [Downey Jr.] to play it forever," Whedon told Desde Hollywood (via Comingsoon). "The great thing is that he has a flying metal suit. So it's not like those Charles Bronson or Roger Moore movies where you're like 'Dude, you can barely stand.' He's got some fight in him. At the same time, if Robert decides to hang it up, he has a perfectly good excuse."

Which is good news because as long as Marvel wants Downey to return, they both will find a way for it to happen. The only sticking point is Downey's salary, which was $50 million for The Avengers.

That's it about Robert Downey Jr. and Iron Man for now. Let's move on to The Avengers 2.

As we know, The Avengers 2 will conclude Marvel's second phase of their superhero movies, and the main bad guy at the end is Thanos, that purple skinned character seen in the closing credits of The Avengers. Here's what Whedon said about the character.

"Well, Thanos is more powerful. He is so powerful, he is not someone you can just trot out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him to be threading through the universe and to save the big finale for the big finale. He is definitely a part of what I've got going on. The thing about the Avengers is that they are very powerful, but they're not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment."

Desde Hollywood speculates that the big finale Whedon mentioned above won't The Avengers 2, but The Avengers 3. I highly doubt that's the case. More likely, the Thanos storyline will conclude in The Avengers 2 but he will have some lesser lackeys working for him that will test the resolve of The Avengers before they face the main guy.
