Joe Cornish Rumored for 'Star Trek 3'

Joe Cornish

Attack the Block director Joe Cornish fielded all kinds of offers after that movie hit -- including an attention-getting invitation to take over the Star Trek franchise from the departing J.J. Abrams. Cornish turned it down, but he must have given the studio the impression that he could be wooed, because that's reportedly exactly what Paramount is doing.

Variety's sources say the studio has renewed its Cornish courtship, although they caution that "No formal offer has been made and Cornish could pass on the project a second time. He last turned down the sci-fi tentpole in May."

Although Cornish has a low-budget background, he's picked up a fair bit of big-budget experience since making a splash with Block, including co-penning the script for Edgar Wright's Ant-Man. His name's been floated for a number of projects, but he's taking his time making his next move -- a smart decision for a young filmmaker, but one that could meet its demise with an attractive enough offer from Paramount.

Either way, the studio's moving quickly. Although Abrams departed to run Star Wars, he's still on board as a Trek producer, and Roberto Orci has returned to write the screenplay for the next installment in the series. According to Variety, plans currently call for production to kick off next summer, so one way or another, the Star Trek crew is going to get its next commander sometime in the near future.
