J.J. Abrams Wants to Spill Trekkie Tears with 'Star Trek Into Darkness'

Star Trek Into Darkness

J.J. Abrams upped the action quotient in a famously talky franchise with his Star Trek reboot a few years ago, and the trailers for the follow-up promise more of the same. But if his latest comments are to be believed, he's also aiming for something a little more sensitive: Your sweet, sweet Trekkie tears.

"The goal of this movie is to make you cry," Abrams told MTV during a recent visit to the network. "If the movie does its job, then by the end of the movie, you will have had a reaction involving the eyes. If the movie works, then there's definitely an emotional component."

And how will Darkness earn that eye reaction? With a high-stakes storyline involving a mysterious villain (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) that Abrams describes as "a terrorist." "He tears into the fabric of the world and the Enterprise family," he added. "It leaves a trail of devastation."

According to Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock, "There is an insidiousness and ruthlessness and fierce intelligence" to the villain -- one that "Almost undermines the interconnectivity of the crew. The stakes are much higher."

At heart, Chris "Captain Kirk" Pine thinks the story boils down to a Kirk-Spock bromance. "The definition of who these two people are definitely comes to bear in this film. It's central to what happens in the story," he argued. "Spock is a logical man of cold reason who is run by laws, regulations and prescriptions. Kirk is a guttural, by-the-heart, instinctive and impulsive guy. Those two ways of looking at the world are central to these characters and their journey."
