J.J. Abrams Reportedly Attached to Direct 'Star Wars VII'

J.J. Abrams

Whatever screenwriter Michael Arndt comes up with for Star Wars: Episode VII, he'll be hard-pressed to make it as entertaining as the heaps of twists and turns that the rumor mill has already given us. To wit: J.J. Abrams, who was once rumored as a potential director for the movie before he publicly dismissed those reports by saying he'd rather be in the audience, is now apparently directing after all.

The Wrap broke the news thanks to "an individual with knowledge of the production" -- and if you're reluctant to take their word for it after their recent scoop regarding Bill Hader starring in the Baywatch movie was contested by Hader's own agent, well, we understand. That's why we held off on reporting this until we found corroborating reports -- and here they are, from Variety and Deadline. Unless everyone's being royally jerked around here -- or the negotiations somehow break down at the 11th hour -- it looks like Abrams is our guy.

Abrams' hire raises all sorts of interesting questions, not the least of which concern his recent stewardship of the rebooted Star Trek franchise; having him at the helm of a rejuvenated Star Wars would bring about something like a grand singularity in the Star Nerd universe.

More importantly, Abrams is a filmmaker with a healthy respect and deep understanding of the movies Star Wars fans grew up with (see: Super 8). He's one of the few mainstream directors who's earned his cachet by pursuing passion projects that intersect artfully with blockbuster grosses, which might make him the most natural fit for Disney's Star Wars. Needless to say, we're eager to find out.
