Jerry Bruckheimer Tells Us Maverick's Edge Over Drones in Top Gun 2

Jerry Bruckheimer has said that the long-awaited sequel to Top Gun would involve drones. In 1986, Maverick (Tom Cruise) was the hottest top gun in the skies, so now we have to wonder if Maverick is still the top gun against drones. Jerry Bruckheimer settled the debate for me even before the movie has started production.
"Well, I think he can think on his feet where the drones can't," Bruckheimer said. "So that always comes in handy."
Bruckheimer was at the press junket for Deliver Us From Evil this weekend. He produced the Screen Gems horror film that opens July 2. Best known for his blockbuster action movies, Bruckheimer elaborated on why he still feels Top Gun is worth revisiting.
"It's an iconic character in a very exciting world that is evolving. The character and the evolution of aviation, there's a great story there. We didn't have drones [in 1986]. That's a big difference."
The late director Tony Scott was interested in directing the sequel to his hit before he passed away, but Bruckheimer says the sequel is still on the front burner. "We were just interviewing a writer Friday that we like a lot. I think we're close now."
Scott's enthusiasm for the sequel helped push the sequel past development hell, but even now there is still enough heat behind Top Gun 2 to make it happen. "I think it's just the enthusiasm around the project helps. Between Paramount wanting to do it and Tom wanting to do it, there's a synergy. David Ellison got involved who's an aviator himself. His company's behind it. The convergence of elements at the same time makes it much more exciting and viable."
