Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman Confirmed for 'Independence Day 2'

Independence Day

Will Smith may be too famous and too expensive for the Independence Day sequel, but his co-stars in the first movie, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, are not. That's why they'll be in the Independence Day 2, aka ID4 Forever Part 1, and Smith is not.

Director Roland Emmerich confirmed the pair's casting to Movies.com (via Slashfilm) during a Q&A for his new thriller White House Down. That's not too surprising since Emmerich has said that the sequel will be comprised of "maybe half of the people that you would know from the first film and the other half are people who are new."

Since the sequel will most likely be centered around these new people, expect the old ones to play supporting roles.

We shouldn't write off Smith appearing in the movie though. While he may be too expensive as a lead, he may be more affordable in a cameo, if that's something he wants to do.

Independence Day 2 is said to take place 20 years after the events in the first movie. Humans are enjoying a period of peace and have made good use of the alien technology they've acquired, but it's only a matter of time until the aliens return to finish what they've started.

Production is planned for early next year for release on July 3, 2015.
