James Gunn Confirmed for 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Sequel

In today's penny-pinching Hollywood, few things are ever left to chance, and Marvel leaves fewer than most. It should surprise no one, then, that even though Guardians of the Galaxy hasn't even arrived in theaters yet, the studio's already making plans for a sequel -- and given the impressively robust early critical reaction to the movie, it also comes as no surprise that they're bringing back pretty much every member of the original team.

That's no surprise as far as the cast is concerned, of course; you don't make a blockbuster these days without pre-signing your stars to future follow-ups. But writers and directors are another matter, and even if Guardians is a huge hit, it wouldn't necessarily have come as a surprise if Marvel had opted to find a new screenwriter and/or director to take the place of the first installment's mastermind, James Gunn. But if you see Guardians of the Galaxy and love it, take heart -- Gunn will be back for the sequel.

Co-writer Nicole Perlman broke the news to the Wrap during the opening hours of Comic-Con, confirming that a sequel is in the works with Gunn attached. As far as her own involvement, she's decidedly less certain, but if Gunn wants her back, it seems likely that he'll be able to bring her on board.

The Wrap's report cites analyst targets of $60 million for Guardians' August 1 opening weekend, but if the deafening critical buzz continues, that could easily grow; this has been an extraordinarily soft few weeks for new films, and audiences are hungry to line up for something new and great.
