James Gunn Calls 'Guardians of the Galaxy' a Movie "About Family"

Guardians

In the past, one of the crucial missteps Hollywood always seemed to make when attempting comic book adaptations was a widespread inability to understand why people read the books in the first place -- not because they took place in crazy situations, but because those wild stories were anchored in easily identifiable stories with real human emotions. Part of the superhero movie's recent ascent has certainly had to do with huge advances in special effects, but at least in Marvel's case, it's also been driven by the studio's impressive knack for never losing sight of their characters' essential humanity.

One might think Guardians of the Galaxy would prove an exception to that rule, given that it concerns a roving band of alien do-gooders whose ranks include a talking raccoon-like creature and a thing that looks like a tree and says nothing but "I am Groot." According to writer/director James Gunn, however, it's just the opposite.

"For me this movie is about family," Gunn insisted during a recent interview. "It’s about a bunch of people that don’t have a family and they learn to love each other. And I think it’s about giving a shit. I think we live in a world where we’re taught that not giving a shit is the coolest thing, and this is a movie that says it’s really OK to give a shit."

The proof will play out on the screen, of course, but holy cow -- Gunn seems to have his pulse on what it might take to create the greatest superhero movie of all time. Count us firmly in the "giving a shit" camp.
