'Iron Man 4' Isn't Happening Anytime Soon

Marvel started its era of box office domination with the original Iron Man movie, and even though Robert Downey, Jr. might be the only actor who's ever managed to successfully hold the studio over a barrel in terms of movie star-sized salary demands, he's also been worth every penny -- and while Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3 failed to recapture the magic of the first installment, they also made gobs and gobs of money, so there's been every reason to expect another sequel.

In recent weeks, Downey has hinted that he'd like to hang onto the role, quipping that there's no reason to "give up the belt when it feels like you can barely get jabbed." But during a more recent interview with Variety, he seemed to suggest that any thoughts of an Iron Man 4 might be premature.

"There isn't one in the pipe," he responded when asked if Marvel was developing a sequel, then stated flatly, "No, there’s no plan for a fourth Iron Man."

Of course, this doesn't mean Downey's done with the character -- he'll be in the lineup for The Avengers: Age of Ultron next year, and he's also contracted for a third Avengers in 2018 -- but it does seem to signal that the studio's original superhero might be nearing the end of his time in the armor.

"I like that the idea is that it would be up to me," he laughed when asked if he'd "let" another actor take over the role. "Like I'm casting director for Marvel."
