'Iron Man 3' Will Be "More Offbeat"

Shane Black is quite an accomplished screenwriter, but as a director, he has only one movie to his name – Kiss, Kiss Bang, Bang, a comedy that starred Robert Downey Jr. as a petty criminal who is mistaken for a private eye. That movie was well-reviewed, but it was a money loser at the box office since Warner Bros released it in only 226 theaters. That was back in 2005, and he hadn't directed anything since.
Now 7 years later, he's getting another chance to go behind the camera. Not only that, he's handed the keys to one of the larger franchises in Iron Man 3. Inexperienced and going many years between assignments? The man has some good connections.
There's a good reason for Black's selection though. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Favreau, the director of the first two Iron Man movies, said they want something "bold and inspired" after The Avengers and felt that Black will be able to achieve that based on what he and Downey had done in Kiss, Kiss Bang, Bang.
Favreau said Black's take on Iron Man 3 will be "a tonal shift" from The Avengers in that it'll be "more offbeat" and will "delve deeper into what makes Tony Stark tick." Iron Man 3 probably won't be a straight up comedy so we'll have to wait and see what he meant by that later.
And if Black's experience is an issue, don't worry. Favreau is apparently "very involved" in the movie, so Black can call him up anytime there's a problem he can't handle.
Iron Man 3 is scheduled to go into production in sometime in May, with a portion of the movie being filmed in China. The movie is scheduled for release on May 3, 2013.
The plot of the movie involves a deadly virus that can give a small percentage of normal humans super powers, but will kill the majority of those infected.
Confirmed for the cast are Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, and Guy Pearce. Rebecca Hall is in talks for the role of a scientist left vacant by Jessica Chastain, and Andy Lau is reportedly playing a friend of Tony Stark's who will help him out of a messy situation.
