A 'Godzilla' Sequel Is Coming

We aren't sure exactly how long it takes to count through nearly $200 million in global box office receipts, but it obviously takes less than a weekend: No sooner has Godzilla emerged as our most recent cineplex champ than the folks at Warner Bros. and Legendary have announced they're already planning the sequel.

Legendary CCO Jon Jashni called the movie's performance "very validating" in an interview with Variety, adding, "You can’t ask for a better situation when you have a group of people, who were perhaps expecting to be let down were impressed. It all lines up when that eco-system aligns and starts feeding off itself."

Jashni might sound a tad disingenuous when he talks about bracing himself for disappointment -- after all, Godzilla was one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year -- but everyone involved understood the damage the franchise sustained following a string of poorly received installments. As he told the trade, "Our initial goal was to re-brand and re-establish the property in a Tiffany way."

It's too soon for anyone to talk about whether any of Godzilla's stars or creative team members will return for the follow-up -- as Jashni put it, "we’re trying to take in all of the results of the weekend" -- but this is one film property with plenty of built-in room for fresh faces. It's the big guy who's the real star, after all.
