'G.I. Joe 3' Gets 'Lethal Weapon 4' Writer Jonathan Lemkin

G.I. Joe

While the people behind G.I. Joe 3 is talking to potential directors to take over the helm in case Jon M. Chu is unable to return, a new writer has been hired to give the script a look-over.

According to Variety, Lethal Weapon 4's Jonathan Lemkin will take a crack at the script, which was last touched by Snow White and the Huntsman's Evan Daugherty. Apparently, not everyone was happy with Daugherty's take.

As for why Paramount is talking with other directors, it's because Chu is working on this truly outrageous little movie called Jem and the Holograms, and he may not be done when the studio plans to shoot early next year. Either that or they have mutually decided to part ways on the sequel. We'll have to see.

In the third movie, Dwayne Johnson will become the de facto face of the franchise, according to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

"The last movie was really the set up, in a way, for Roadblock [Johnson's character] to take over," Bonaventura told Collider. "Dwayne came aboard a little late last time so we weren't able to do everything I think we can do this time, and really get a story that services what the audience expects out of him, and also as an actor pushes him into areas that you wouldn't normally explore in a big franchise movie perhaps."

G.I. Joe 3 does not have a release date yet, but sometime in 2016 is planned.
