'Ghostbusters 3' Now Rumored to Film in 2014

Ghostbusters 3

We've long since reached the point of irritation with Ghostbusters 3 rumors around here, but the latest one actually has a (supposed) date attached, so it's with a groan and a grumble that we reluctantly pass along word that the long-discussed sequel might -- might -- finally start filming during the spring of 2014.

This report emanates from Coming Soon, where an unnamed (of course) executive at Sony claims that the studio "has penciled in a spring 2014 date to start shooting the third installment here in Cleveland."

As JoBlo reports, this news comes hot on the heels of a report suggesting that Jonah Hill and Emma Stone have been offered parts in Ghostbusters 3, which would kinda-sorta jibe with rumors that the new sequel will pass the Ghostbusters baton to a new generation. As Dan Aykroyd put it:

"It's based on new research that's being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University... Basically, there's research being done that I can say that the world or the dimension that we live in, our four planes of existence, length, height, width and time, become threatened by some of the research that's being done. Ghostbusters -- new Ghostbusters -- have to come and solve the problem."

Personally -- and we think we speak for a fair number of prospective filmgoers when we say this -- if we're going to get a Ghostbusters 3, we'd much rather see a continuation of the classic first film than some cockamamie "new Ghostbusters" caper. But since Aykroyd (who's been the one championing the idea for a third Ghostbusters all along) wants to go that route, all we can do is hope the script leaves plenty of room for our old friends...or maybe that this ends up being one more unfounded rumor.
