Friday Matinee Box Office: "Straight Outta Compton" $25M Friday, $55M-$60M Weekend

Straight Outta Compton

Kaboom! reports that “Straight Outta Compton” blew up the box office on Friday (today).

According to early matinee ticket sales, the industry is predicting that the rap drama will take in $25M by the end of the day, including the $5M from yesterday’s evening screenings.

If that number holds, then the Universal film could earn up to $60M for the weekend, which is double what analysts have optimistically predicted (Binh and I were predicting $25M-$30M). That’s better than the $150M-budgeted tentpole “Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation” did a couple of weeks ago.

I was wondering if “Compton” was frontloaded. Apparently, it’s not. We have another sleeper hit this summer.

Meanwhile, there’s also another movie opening this week: “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” It took in $900K Thursday and a projected $5M for Friday which would lead to $15M for the entire weekend. With a $75M budget, that’s a troubling figure.

Both films are well-reviewed. “Compton” scored a high 87% on Rotten Tomatoes while “U.N.C.L.E.” scored a solid 68% (which I'm not part of).
