First 'Getaway' Trailer Suggests a Familiar Ride

It may be true that there aren't any new stories to be told, but there's still a difference between a film that tries to put a unique spin on a familiar tale and a movie that settles for a generic retelling. Judging from its title, you might guess that the Ethan Hawke/Selena Gomez thriller Getaway would fall into the latter camp -- and after watching this trailer, you probably won't change your mind.
Hawke stars here as a former race car driver whose wife is kidnapped by a criminal psycho with a funny accent (Jon Voight) as part of a grand master plan to force Hawke to use his driving skills in some heist or other; complicating things is a hoodied urchin (Gomez) who ends up in the passenger seat of the sweet Shelby Cobra Mustang that (ahem) drives the action.
From its synopsis to the dark, blue-tinted cinematography, Getaway looks more like a Liam Neeson paycheck gig than a late-summer action blockbuster, and while the bajillion quick cuts certainly don't add cohesion, Hawke and Gomez seem to be acting in different movies even while they're sitting in the same frame. The studios tend to use the last weekend in August as a sort of bilge pump for movies they aren't all that excited about releasing; Getaway is currently scheduled for an August 30 debut.
