Fede Alvarez Already Discussing 'Evil Dead' Remake Sequel

Fede Alvarez

With loud pre-release buzz and a smattering of positive early reviews, Fede Alvarez's upcoming Evil Dead remake looks like it might be one of the early horror hits of the year, so it isn't entirely surprising that he's already making preparations for a sequel. What may surprise you, however, is how wide open his creative palette seems to be.

"We’re just starting to build a story and figure out what kind of movie it’s going to be," Alvarez told Collider. "It depends on the story we find, because personally, I think it has to shock everybody. It has to go to a different place just like Army of Darkness did with Evil Dead 2. It has to do that switch that every Evil Dead movie did with the previous one."

After Collider's reporter explicitly pointed out that the Dead series went from schlock horror to campy gore to a sort of over-the-top fantasy hybrid, Alvarez seemed to indicate that he's willing to take all that into account for his future excursions into Evil Dead territory.

"You have to create something different and completely new," he argued, "And it’s exciting for me because in a long time, this, the new one -- the next one -- is going to be a completely new, fresh, 100% original, you bet. Because this one has so many ties to the first one ... But this next one, it’s not a remake of Evil Dead 2. It’s something completely new and different. I’m so excited to see where that’s going to go."

Of course, every reboot director says words like "different" and "excited," but given that the new Evil Dead is already a bit of a straight horror departure from previous installments in the franchise, it's interesting to think about the different directions Alvarez could spin off from creator Sam Raimi's mythology (even as Raimi himself continues to mull further sequels to the original series). Could this be the trilogy so nice they made it twice?
