'Evil Dead 4' In The Works, But Who Will Make It? And Who The Heck Is Award Pictures?

First the good news: Sam Raimi's production house Renaissance Pictures is developing a fourth Evil Dead movie with Sony and FilmDistrict.

Unfortunately, when Renaissance went to register the trademark, a company called Award Pictures filed an objection with the U.S. Trademark Office saying the company is preparing its own Evil Dead movie and that Renaissance no longer owns the Evil Dead name since they've relinquished it by their own volition. Their evidence? A quote by Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi in the 2000 book The Evil Dead Companion in which they say, "Ha! We're never going to do a sequel.” Head on over to The Hollywood Reporter to read up on the back story.

In any case, Renaissance and Award will sort this out in the California Central District Court. To save you time, here's the court case number: 2:12-cv-03805-DSF-JCG.

So who or what is Award Pictures? I have never heard of that production company before, so I did a little digging.

Apparently, Award Pictures, LLC is a Connecticut company that is a subsidiary of The Award Group. The LLC was formed in 2004 to present their wares at the American Film Market.

Since its existence, I'm not sure they've actually produced anything. The company's website lists several motion pictures in the pre-production phase, which the Evil Dead movie is one. Supposedly, they've developed a animation TV series called Jungle Bungles, but a quick search didn't turn up anything about it.

As for that their Evil Dead movie, here's the title and synopsis:

Evil Dead: Genesis of the Necronomicon
In 1912 an archeologist, Dr. Ashley, receives ancient cuneiform texts that take him on a journey across the world, through time, and to countless horrors, that ultimately reveal the origin of the awful book of evil, "The Necronomicon."

However, you can forget about this movie getting made. I suspect this lawsuit won't even go to trail, so let's start speculating on what Raimi's Evil Dead 4 is about and whether or not Bruce Campbell will return as Ash.
