EOB Weekend Box Office Podcast 12/08/2014: Mockingjay Part 1 tops one of the worst weekends

Chris Rock in "Top Five"

Welcome to podcast #13.

Binh and I discussed the new “Terminator: Genesys” trailer; neither of us liked it.

There wasn’t much movement in the top 10 at the box office, other than the huge 50% drop that most films experienced. Family films like “Penguins of Madagascar” and “Big Hero 6” did worst, dropping around 60%.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the reading for “Penguins of Madagascar” has inched up to 71% from the mid 60s it scored on opening day. Maybe it’ll hold up better in the coming weeks because of the good word-of-mouth.

I pegged Chris Rock’s “Top Five” to open in the $6M-$8M range this weekend. After watching the film last night at a press screening, I think it can go as high as $15M, even though it’s only opening in about 1,000 theaters. It’s Chris Rock’s best film. Finally, he has a film where the humor is as sharp, edgy, and insightful as one of his stand-up performances. Currently, “Top Five” has a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Binh and I put the opening of Ridley Scott’s “Exodus: Gods and Kings” in the $30M-$35M range. I haven’t seen it yet.
