Emma Thompson and Nick Offerman Join Robert Redford for 'A Walk in the Woods'

Walk in the Woods

After many years in and out of development -- and the significant (but ultimately temporary) setback caused by the death of his onetime co-star, Paul Newman -- Robert Redford is finally setting out on A Walk in the Woods, his long hoped-for adaptation of Bill Bryson's comedic mid-life travel memoir about walking the Appalachian Trail with a friend.

Redford had already lined up Nick Nolte to co-star, and he's quietly amassed a fairly impressive group of behind-the-scenes collaborators, including director Ken Kwapis and screenwriter Michael Arndt. Now Variety brings word that the supporting cast will be rounded out by Emma Thompson, Nick Offerman, and Kristen Schaal.

There's no word on a release date yet, but production started Monday, and Redford is nothing if not tenacious when it comes to a project he's got his heart set on -- particularly when it comes to literary adaptations. As film fans with long memories might recall, Redford ardently pursued the film rights to Robert Pirsig's philosophical treatise/autobiographical novel Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance during the '70s and '80s, ultimately to no avail. Bryson's book is altogether more film-friendly, so here's hoping Wildwood Enterprises and Route One Films are able to secure theatrical distribution sooner than later.
