Elizabeth Olsen Rumored for 'Avengers 2'

Elizabeth Olsen

Saoirse Ronan's loss could end up becoming Elizabeth Olsen's gain. According to sources at Bleeding Cool, Ronan has reportedly passed on the opportunity to play the Scarlet Witch in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Olsen is next in line to take the gig.

It's all rumor at this point, of course -- and even if it's true, there's no guarantee that Olsen would actually take the part. But if Bleeding Cool's sources are on target, it indicates Marvel's continued willingness to pursue the sort of arthouse-friendly talent that wouldn't have gone near a comic book movie in the old days -- and writer/director Joss Whedon's continued gift for sussing out interesting, slightly left-field choices when it comes to bringing established comic characters to life.

Olsen, who rose to prominence in the critically lauded indie drama Martha Marcy May Marlene, has ramped up her profile lately with roles in a spate of upcoming big-budget projects, including Godzilla and Spike Lee's Oldboy remake, so although her filmography to this point has been light on magic-wielding mutants who wear a lot of tight leather, seeing her enter the Marvel universe doesn't seem entirely out of the question.

One way or another, we should have a better idea of how Whedon's rounding out the Age of Ultron cast in the next few months; filming on the Avengers sequel is set to kick off in early 2014.
