Dwayne Johnson Could Get a 'Fast & Furious' Spinoff

Dwayne Johnson

For a film franchise that once looked like it was on the verge of permanent direct-to-video exile, the Fast & Furious series is surprisingly robust -- in fact, in the weeks leading up to the sixth installment's arrival in theaters on May 24, recent addition Dwayne Johnson's talking about a spinoff for his character.

Johnson shared the news during a recent chat with Empire, responding to a query about a possible Luke Hobbs standalone movie by nodding and saying, "Possibly. I know that's the goal." While Johnson could have just been trying to mollify his interviewer, who described himself as "desperate" for a spinoff, he seemed to indicate more serious discussions have taken place.

As far as Johnson's concerned, he could bring Hobbs back to the screen for a spinoff after Fast & Furious 6 -- but since we know a seventh installment is already in development, that raises the question of whether the Hobbs film would really be a spinoff at all, or simply yet another lead character change-up in a series that's already had a few of them.
