Duncan Jones Set to Direct 'World of Warcraft'

It looked like it was dead in the water last summer when Sam Raimi departed for Oz the Great and Powerful, but Legendary's long-gestating World of Warcraft adaptation is apparently still in development -- in fact, now it has a brand new director in the form of Moon and Source Code helmer Duncan Jones.

As any self-respecting sci-fi fan could tell you, Jones made major critical waves with Moon, which starred Sam Rockwell as a lonely astronaut whose tour of duty at an all-but-vacant lunar base comes to an unexpected conclusion. Source Code, meanwhile, proved one of the rare mainstream science fiction flicks that managed to make money while still having half a brain -- all of which is to say that Jones would seem to be a pretty tremendous choice for World of Warcraft.

As Collider notes, Jones is an avid gamer, which should prompt a sigh of relief from fans bracing themselves for a Super Mario Bros.-style cash-in with little connection to the source material. Between this and the Michael Fassbender-led Assassin's Creed adaptation currently in the works, this could be a turning point for video games at the movies.

The studio is reportedly hoping to begin production this fall, with Jones working from a Charles Leavitt screenplay and a $100 million-plus budget. Current plans call for World of Warcraft to arrive in theaters sometime in 2015.
