In news that should come as a relief to anyone who doesn't feel the need to see older films being reissued in 3D several times a year, Disney has pulled the plug on its plans to give The Little Mermaid a three-dimensional facelift.

Reuters reports that the studio's change of heart comes as a result of disappointing box office figures for previous 3D double-dips, including Beauty and hte Beast and Monsters, Inc. -- the latter of which generated ticket sales of only $30.6 million during its recent return to theaters.

According to reports, while work had already begun on the 3D conversion process for Mermaid, things weren't too far along -- Disney had only gotten rolling on the project in earnest in November.

It's a loss for filmgoers who were hoping to see Ariel's clamshells in all their three-dimensional glory, but seeing as how it opens up more room in Disney's schedule for stuff like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy -- to say nothing of those Star Wars movies people won't stop spreading rumors about -- we're pretty sure their pain will be short-lived.
