Disney Planning Live-Action '101 Dalmations' Spinoff 'Cruella'

We don't know a whole lot about Disney's upcoming Angelina Jolie-fronted Maleficent, but we're going to go ahead and guess that the studio must be happy with the way things are going, because they've reportedly started moving on another live-action spinoff focusing on the female heavy from one of their animated classics: 101 Dalmatians' Cruella de Vil.

Titled Cruella, the new project is being scripted by Aline Brosh McKenna, who also wrote the upcoming live-action Cinderella (not to mention The Devil Wears Prada). Andrew Gunn, who previously worked with the studio on Bedtime Stories, is handling production duties; at present, no director or stars have been mentioned publicly.

Of course, this won't be Cruella's first trip to the live-action frontier; Glenn Close memorably played her in a pair of mid-'90s films for the studio, and while nobody would seriously hold either of those Dalmatians up as classics, Close was such a perfect choice for the role that anyone else should think twice before taking over -- but then again, we'd also lay even odds that this ends up being a Wicked-style prequel that explains how young Cruella started living up to her name.

No word yet on when Cruella is expected to reach theaters, but with Disney slowly but surely working toward an annual release schedule for all of its many intellectual property branches, we could see it showing up in 2015 -- a year after Maleficent, and a year before the next Disney villain is brought to life. Hmmm...who could it be?
