Disney Confirms 'Star Wars: Episode VII' on Target for 2015

Star Wars

Disney has been pretty slow to release official information about its slate of upcoming Star Wars sequels, but nobody gets out of CinemaCon without making a few big announcements, and this one's sort of a doozy, albeit in classically circumspect Mouse House fashion: Episode VII is indeed coming to theaters in 2015, with a new Star Wars-related film to follow every summer.

Of course, all this really does is affirm the initial reports that came out of Disney purchasing Lucasfilm, but once the studio hired J.J. Abrams to direct Episode VII, there seemed to be some doubt as to whether they'd be able to get him involved quickly enough to stay on schedule -- given that he's currently working on the new Star Trek sequel, and reportedly serving as a producer on that franchise's inevitable next installment.

No one from the studio is offering specifics, but apparently all those scheduling wrinkles have been smoothed out; as promised, 2015 will find Disney kicking off a new wave of Star Wars product that will reportedly alternate between standalone adventures and sequels to the original trilogy.

That's an ambitious release schedule, even for a deep-pocketed studio operating from what could be copious notes from George Lucas, and it's easy to see why some fans are skeptical. Still, for the time being, this is news worth getting excited about...right?
