'Despicable Me 2' Gets a Full-Length Trailer

Despicable Me 2

With just a few months to go before Gru (Steve Carell) returns to theaters in Despicable Me 2, it's about time for Universal to shift its promotional efforts into high gear -- which is exactly what they're doing with the movie's new full-length trailer.

At two minutes and change, the clip does a good job of playing to Despicable's strengths (physical comedy and subverting good guy/bad guy stereotypes) while laying out just enough of the plot to hook you in without spoiling everything. The deal this time around: Gru, now a doting single dad, gets forcibly roped into saving the earth by the Anti-Villain League, which wants to use his dastardly know-how to battle an extreme new threat.

Not a bad setup for a sequel, and judging from the scenes teased in the trailer, it's one that will leave plenty of room for all the stuff audiences loved the first time around -- including those knuckleheaded little Minions, who will be getting a movie of their own soon.

Despicable Me 2 is scheduled for a July 3 release. Watch the trailer below:
