David Yates Directing 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'

David Yates

David Yates is going back to the Harry Potter universe and will direct the first installment of spinoff series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, according to Variety. Yates directed the last four Harry Potter movies.

Written by J. K. Rowling, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is companion book to the main series which talks about the various fantastic creatures found in the Harry Potter universe.

The big screen adaptation, also written by Rowling, is set 70 years before the events in the first Harry Potter and will be centered on Newt Scamander, the fictional author of Fantastic Beasts. The story will be told over three megamovies.

It is unclear at this point if Yates will stay around to direct all three, but if he can't or won't, the studio will probably call upon past Potter directors like Alfonso Cuaron to pick up the slack.

The first movie will arrive in theaters on November 18, 2016.
