David Yates will be helming Universal's Scarface remake, Deadline has learned. David Ayer wrote the first draft of the script, but it has been through the hands of several writers.

Yates directed the last four Harry Potter movies and was attached to direct Warner Bros' Tarzan before it was shut down by the studio earlier this year due to budget concerns. They will try to start the movie up again in 2014, but with Yates taking on Scarface, it may mean Tarzan needs a bit more work.

No word on when production will begin, but casting ought to begin soon.

The new Scarface won't be a straight remake though. It will be a contemporary take on the American dream from the point of view of someone in the criminal underworld. The main character's background, although he will probably be still named Tony, and the setting will probably be different from the previous two movies.

"I see it as the story of the American dream, with a character whose moral compass points in a different direction...There are enough opportunities in the real world today that provide an opportunity to do this right. If it was just an attempt to remake the 1983 film, that would never work," Ayer told Deadline.
