Daniel Craig Reportedly Holding Up 'The Girl Who Played With Fire'

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo didn't become the huge box office hit Sony wanted, but it did decent enough that a sequel can be made if the studio wanted to, if at a lower cost.
From the rumors, it was believed that it was Sony that was the one holding up the sequel because the first movie didn't do as well as it had hoped. Not so, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Their sources told them it was Daniel Craig.
Sony wants to make the sequel, The Girl Who Played with Fire, but Craig's desire for a pay raise in light of Skyfall's box office performance puts the company in a difficult position because sequels typically make less than the previous movie.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was made for $90 million, but for the sequel, the studio wants the budget to be much lower. A pay raise for Craig would mean less money for everything else.
If we think about it, even if the above is true, the holdup can still be attributed to Sony. It seems like the studio doesn't want to pay what it takes to get the movie made.
As a work-around, Craig's character may be simply be written out, according to the report, but that doesn't make sense, really. Craig is a box office draw. The sequel would do better with him than without because not many people would pay to see Rooney Mara, as awesome as she is.
Also, writing a character out is not a simple process and will costs money to do so. Will David Fincher want to make a movie that's not faithful to the source material, especially if he has other projects in the pipeline?
