'Cliffhanger' Remake in the Works

For those wishing for a Cliffhanger remake, France-based StudioCanal has heard your prayers. The studio and producer Neal Moritz have set the remake in motion by tapping Joe Gazzam to work on on the script, Deadline has learned.

Apparently, this writing job is highly coveted (writers need all the work they can get, after all), and Gazzam was able to impress Moritz with his pitch.

No word on what the new take well be, but in the original Cliffhanger, Sylvester Stallone stars as Gabe Walker, an expert mountain climber who works as a rescue ranger in the Rocky Mountains. A failed rescue leaves him traumatized, but a group of criminals led by John Lithgow's Eric Qualen forces him back into the mountains.

Cliffhanger is one of Stallone's highest grossing non-franchise movies, with a domestic box office of $84 million and $255 million total worldwide. The rights to the movie ended up at StudioCanal when Carolco went bankrupt.

There's no U.S. distributor yet, but Sony got dibs.
