Christian Bale in Talks to Compete With Tom Hardy to Climb 'Everest'

Christian Bale

No, Christian Bale and Tom Hardy are not rivals in the same movie, but they will be starring in competing movies from two different studios.

Deadline has learned that Bale is in talks to headline an Everest movie from Universal, Working Title, and Emmett/Furla Films that's to be directed by Contraband's Baltasar Kormakur.

Unlike the one developing at Sony with Doug Liman attached to direct, this Everest movie will be about the 1996 event that claimed the lives of 8 climbers on Mount Everest. No word on who Bale is playing, but it is assumed he'll be playing one of the survivors, unless he's in talks to play one of the guides who perished during the descent.

The other Everest movie, the Liman-directed one, will take place during the 1920s and stars Tom Hardy as British climber George Mallory, who died during his attempt to summit the mountain in 1924. This one is set up at Sony.

Since the two movies can't both be titled Everest, expect one or both to have a different title before they reach theaters, which should be sometime in 2014.
