Chris Cooper Will Play Norman Osborn in 'Amazing Spider-Man 2'

Nobody outside the Sony boardroom thought the Spider-Man franchise really needed a reboot so soon after it started, but director Marc Webb made the most of the situation with The Amazing Spider-Man -- even if the movie itself was sort of pointless, it told Spidey's origin story (yet again) with a reasonable amount of panache, and with a terrific cast besides.

The jury's still out on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in terms of story, of course, but with regards to casting, Webb is off to another excellent start: After lining up Shailene Woodley, Dane DeHaan, and Paul Giamatti to join Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, he's gone ahead and added Chris Cooper to play one of the franchise's cornerstone characters, Norman Osborn.

As Spider-Man readers are well aware, Osborn is a central figure in the Marvel universe; aside from being the original Green Goblin, Osborn has used his company's wealth to parlay himself into a series of crucial spots in the company's chronology, including serving as the armored Iron Patriot for a time. Sam Raimi turned to Willem Dafoe to play the character in 2002's Spider-Man, but quickly killed him off, relegating Dafoe to flashbacks and hallucinations for the rest of the trilogy.

As Marvel's writers have consistently proven over the years, Osborn is a story-rich character -- and as Cooper's ably demonstrated with his filmography, he's a marvelous actor. Here's hoping The Amazing Spider-Man 2 proves a promising beginning rather than an all-too-brief appearance.
