China Box Office: "My Old Classmate" $35M, "The Great Hypnotist" $22M, "The Iceman 3D" $11M, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" $10M

My Old Classmate

Business for local films exploded during China’s Labour Day holiday, which started last Thursday (May 1st) and ended on Saturday (May 3rd). Sunday was reserved for the debut of Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

For the entire week of April 28th to May 4th, YA romance “My Old Classmate” soured to $34.6M, upping its total to a staggering $52.3M after just ten days. It was looking like this could be another $100M-grosser if a certain superhero didn’t enter the market and took away precious screens, but about that later.

In second place is the debut of Leste Chen’s “The Great Hypnotist,” which stars Karen Mok and “Lost in Thailand’s” Xu Zheng. In five days, the thriller took in a solid $22.3M. This is another decent hit for Zheng following last year’s $43M-grossing “No Man’s Land.”

Donnie Yen’s time-travel martial arts epic “The Iceman 3D” thaws another $10.5M at the box office, placing third and punching up its total to a business-as-usual $22M.

Don’t expect these top three films to do much more business in the following weeks because they lost a majority of their screenings when the “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” opened last Sunday to a record number of screens.

In a single day, the Andrew Garfield-starrer rolled up $9.8M in ticket sales, placing fourth. Because of the Labour Day holidays, last Sunday was a workday in China, so Sony can brag that it’s the biggest opening ever during a workday in that region. It’s worldwide total is at $374M after three weeks.

Following Spider-Man, in fifth with $7.6M, is his fellow Avenger “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” It’s total after a month in release is $116M, the best of the year so far for a foreign film. The worldwide figure is at $680M.

Fox’s “Rio 2” finished in sixth with $5.7M, upping its total to an outstanding $38M. Worldwide, it’s at $394M.

Rounding out the top ten are “The Outback” ($3M), “Transcendence” ($2.2M, $20M total), “That Demon Within” ($1.5M, $17.4M total), and “Zambezia” ($1.4M).
