Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo Ready for More 'Vacation'

Clark and Ellen Griswold

They've already lined up some pretty stellar new blood for their new Vacation, and now it looks like writer/directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are ready to do right by this long-languishing franchise by making room for its old stars.

We're talking, of course, about Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo, who starred as Clark and Ellen Griswold in the first National Lampoon's Vacation films, starting with 1983's laff-a-minute original and continuing through European Vacation, Christmas Vacation, and (the admittedly rather lamentable) Vegas Vacation; according to Variety, the two are "in early talks" to join Ed Helms, playing their son Rusty, and Christina Applegate, set to play his wife.

Sadly, Variety hastens to add that Chase and D'Angelo's appearance will be "more on the cameo level," which seems kind of lame, given that any random Vacation movie is at least 20 percent filler, and whatever Daley and Goldstein have written for their script, we're guessing it could be improved by a little extra helping of good old dunderheaded Clark and his long-suffering sweetheart.

To be fair to Daley and Goldstein, it sounds like the hangup might be on Chase and D'Angelo's end -- as Variety puts it, "there was concern" at the studio that the duo would decline the opportunity to the franchise, which was apparently addressed after everyone figured out the budget and the screenplay. Now, according to sources, New Line has "redoubled their efforts" to woo the elder Griswolds.

Fingers crossed that it all works out -- much as we like Helms and Applegate, it just won't be a Vacation without Clark and Ellen. And besides, don't they deserve a chance to say goodbye to the series in a film with a better laughs-to-groans ratio than Vegas Vacation?
