'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' Directors Promise to 'Up the Ante'

Captain America 2

In Captain America: The First Avenger, our hero (Chris Evans) took a dose of the super-soldier serum, joined the Allies on their march to victory in World War II, and foiled the nefarious efforts of the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) to obtain the mystical Cosmic Cube. What's he supposed to do for a second act?

That was the problem facing directors Anthony and Joe Russo when they stepped in to helm Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which adapts the well-received run from the comics in which Cap's old pal Bucky (Sebastian Stan), long thought dead, returns from his presumed grave with a new identity and a fresh axe to grind. According to comments the duo recently made to USA Today, they faced their challenge by getting bigger and more ambitious with their storytelling.

Talking about The Winter Soldier's big set pieces, Joe Russo explained, "There's nobody better at that kind of stuff than Marvel if you're going to attempt to pull that off and go for it. We all tried to up the ante with what happens in this movie in terms of what's come before, and I think we've done that."

Explaining the decision to bring the Winter Soldier into the mix, Anthony added, "He's an amazingly drawn character. He's so well conceived. It's one of the best comic runs in the last 20 years, one of our favorite comic runs of all time, and we really want to do it justice. It was important to us to make sure he just jumped off the page to the screen."

Audiences can also expect a continuation of the fish-out-of-water theme that was picked up with Cap in The Avengers, following our hero being thawed out from several decades in deep freeze. "Some of the people who used to be our enemies are now our allies," explained Samuel L. Jackson. "'Well, how do we trust those guys?' or 'How do we trust the guys that you didn't trust who don't trust you?' And explaining to him that the black and white of good guys/bad guys has now turned into this gray area."
