Box Office: "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation" Tracking to Open at $40M

Tom Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson in "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation"

According to Variety, “Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation” is tracking to open at only $40M at the box office, which would make it the weakest of the Tom Cruise franchise. I’m not counting the previous film “Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol” though because it had a platform release.

This figure seems low to me, especially because the previous film was so well received, both critically and commercially. You’d think the goodwill generated by that would lead to a bigger opening for the follow-up.

On HSX, they have “Rogue Nation’s” opening at $48M, which is higher but still low to me. On my podcast with Binh Ngo, I was predicting $70M!

Maybe tracking is low and I’m high, and the film ends up somewhere in the middle like the second film, which opened to $58M in the summer of 2000.

We’ll see when the matinee number comes out on Friday. I wonder if Paramount will do Thursday evening screenings, like most event films do nowadays. That would give us an early indication of where “Rogue Nation” is heading.

Early reviews have been great, and I agree with those critics who were thrilled by it.

My podcast with Binh Ngo (My box office prediction for "Rogue Nation" is at the 58 minute mark):
