'Black Widow' Movie in the Works, Says Marvel Chief

Black Widow

Marvel pretty much rules Hollywood right now, but their movies aren't without their detractors -- many of whom are quick to point out that theirs is a white male-dominated universe that has thus far passed up many opportunities to highlight the majority of the comics publisher's minority or female heroes. According to studio chief Kevin Feige, that could soon be changing on at least one front.

Talking about Scarlett Johansson's appearance as the former Soviet spy known as Black Widow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Feige promised a juicier backstory for the character -- and an even more pronounced presence in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron.

"We start filming the next Avengers film at the end of March," explained Feige. "Widow’s part in that is very big. We learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film."

As Screen Rant points out, Black Widow has appeared in just as many Marvel movies as Captain America or Thor, but she's yet to receive her own movie. While stopping short of committing to anything, Feige did signal that this is something the studio is at least aware of. "The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great," he agreed. "We have some development work with that."

Marvel can be pretty tight-lipped about its upcoming projects when it wants to be, so there's no telling what "some development work" might mean -- or whether Johansson will still be the one in that black catsuit whenever Black Widow gets a standalone feature. Still, with Marvel's comics wing focusing more and more on women and minority heroes (check out the Mighty Avengers and new Ms. Marvel titles for solid examples), it stands to reason that the movie side of the business will catch up soon.
