Benedict Cumberbatch Is Playing Gary Mitchell in 'Star Trek 2'. Wait, Who?

Star Trek 2

If Benedict Cumberbatch is not playing Khan in the forthcoming Star Trek sequel, who will he playing? Karl Urban, who plays the ship's doctor, may have the answer.

When asked about Cumberbatch at a press junket for Dredd, Urban had this to say,

“He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.”

Wait, Gary who?

As someone who didn't have every line of every dialog in every Star Trek TV episode committed to memory, I had to rely to others more steeped in the Star Trek lore to enlighten me to who this Mitchell character is.

According to those in the know, Mitchell was an old pal of Kirk's from his Academy days and, in the episode Where No Man Has Gone Before, he gained god-like powers when he came in contact with something called the galactic barrier. Kirk had to eventually deal with his friend on a remote planet, with Kirk emerging as the victor.

So, there you have it. The mystery surrounding Cumberbatch's character has finally been cleared up. Or has it?

According to Robert Orci, who's one of the producers/screenwriters for Star Trek 2, Gary Mitchell was named along with four other characters to have no part in the sequel. So that means.... what does it mean exactly? Someone has to be lying.

With so much disinformation and misdirection out there, we may be dealing with a vast conspiracy, perpetrated by the Illuminati, to obfuscate Cumberbatch's role in Star Trek 2.

In other words, stay tuned.
