Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake Coast (Enjoyably) in 'Runner Runner' Trailer

Runner Runner

We often criticize actors for taking roles that play obviously to strengths they've exploited in other pictures, but they often do it for a good reason: It works. For your latest example, here are Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake in the first Runner Runner trailer.

Timberlake plays Richie, a Princeton grad student who's supposedly smart enough to understand things like gambling statistics but still dumb enough to try financing his tuition via online poker, and Affleck plays Ivan, the gambling tycoon that Richie confronts after being swindled out of a fat pile of money. Seeing a potential asset, Ivan hires Richie, and they're off enjoying the high life together -- at least until the FBI steps in and tries converting Richie into an inside asset to bring Ivan down.

Affleck's good at playing smooth, and Timberlake has a pleasing nervous energy that works for roles like this, so they could both be accused of loafing here -- but the first Runner Runner trailer, embedded below, makes a compelling case for loafing as a painless way to pass a few weeks on a Puerto Rico movie set (or 90 minutes in a darkened theater). Check it out below, place your bets, and wait for Runner Runner to arrive in theaters on September 27.
