'Avatar 4' Is Happening; More Writers Added

Avatar

Avatar, the highest grossing movie of all time ($2.78 billion), is getting not only two, but three sequels, Deadline has learned. All three will go into production at the same time next year. Boom!

We've learned yesterday that Josh Friedman has been brought on to work on the Avatar 2 screenplay, with the assumption that he'll work in the third one too. It turns out that is only the tip of the iceberg.

While Friedman is working on the script for Avatar 2, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver will be working on Avatar 3 and Shane Salerno will be working on the one for Avatar 4. The plan is to have them all in production shape by the time filming is set to begin next year.

The sequels will be released a year apart, with Avatar 2 coming out in December 2016, Avatar 3 in December 2017, and Avatar 4 in December 2018.

We've learned early on about the possibility of three Avatar sequels going into production at the same time, but along the way, those have been scaled back to two, so the announcement of Avatar 4 being back on is somewhat of a surprise.

Director James Cameron has said that Battle Angel will be his next movie after the Avatar movies so maybe his desire to get out of the Avatar-only business may play a role in the decision to have them all made at the same time.
