Aubrey Peeples Nabs 'Jem and the Holograms' Lead

Unlike most cartoon- or toy-to-film adaptations, Jon M. Chu's Jem and the Holograms has gotten rolling too quickly for us to spend much time wishing it wouldn't, which makes this week's announcement regarding the film's casting far less aggravating than we thought it'd be.

The Hollywood Reporter shares the scoop, which has Nashville star Aubrey Peeples taking the lead role in the film. Ryan Landels wrote the script, which "reimagines" the rockin' pink-haired cartoon hero "for a whole new generation with themes of being true to who you are in a multitasking, hyperlinked social media age."

Peeples is joined by A.N.T. Farm vet Stefanie Scott, who will play Jem's sister Kimber, Pretty Little Liars cast member Aurora Perrineau, who's paying Shana, and The Fosters' Hayley Kiyoko, who's playing Aja.

Jem and the Holograms is already shooting, and to Chu's credit, he's been aggressively promoting the production as it comes together; the movie has its own Tumblr, where Chu recently posted glimpses of the ladies in all their Holo-glory. Flimsy as the notion of turning a cheesy cartoon into a movie still seems, it's also encouraging that Peeples has singing chops, as demonstrated in her Nashville appearances; whether it all comes together in anything remotely watchable obviously remains to be seen, but we can't fault all this enthusiasm.
