Ashley Tisdale Joins Nicolas Cage's 'Left Behind'

Left Behind

Much as we might like to go on believing that the whole "Nicolas Cage is starring in a reboot of that Left Behind movie that starred Kirk Cameron and was inspired by the bestselling evangelical rapture fantasy thriller series" was an eggnog-induced holiday dream, it's actually happening -- and as proof, here's word that the new-look Left Behind cast has grown to include Ashley Tisdale.

This news, which does nothing to dispel our knee-jerk assumption that the new Left Behind will be every bit as unintentionally hilarious as the last one, is just the latest in a growing series of facepalm moments in Tisdale's ongoing quest to be taken seriously as an actress (example: her next film, due in theaters on April 12, is Scary Movie 5).

As Cinemablend points out, even though the Left Behind books have sold a bajillion copies -- and even though the first Left Behind movie did well enough to spawn a trilogy of Kirk Cameron films that presumably served as hot draws at church youth nights all across America -- there isn't a ton of obvious upside for her here, given that A) the increasingly commercially impotent Cage is toplining, and B) director Vic Armstrong's last feature credit was the 1993 Dolph Lundgren opus Army of One.

For those who really can't help themselves, here's the rest of the scoop: Tisdale will be playing Cage's daughter, Chloe Steele, who becomes a founding member of a group called the Force after the rapture happens and strands all the sinning non-believers (a group that includes Chloe's airline pilot dad Ray, natch).

According to the IMDb, Left Behind will cost $15 million, and is scheduled to arrive in theaters sometime in 2014.
