Armie Hammer Locked Down for 'Lone Ranger' Sequel

The Lone Ranger

For awhile, it looked like Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger wasn't even going to be made, but now that the Disney-backed revisionist take on the classic Western -- starring Armie Hammer as the titular vigilante and Johnny Depp as his Native American sidekick Tonto -- is readying its arrival this weekend, talk is already turning to sequels.

And although Verbinski's Ranger arguably focuses more on Tonto than its alleged lead character, fans can take comfort in knowing that, per the norm, Disney has locked up Hammer for future installments. As Screen Rant notes, he's ready to ride again -- although he cautions that it depends on whether or not audiences turn out for this one.

As for Depp? He isn't quite buttoned up yet, but Disney has plenty of experience getting him to re-up for sequels (see: Caribbean, Pirates of the) -- and it sounds like he had a good time on The Lone Ranger, because Screen Rant's piece quotes him as saying, "If they started talking sequel on this I’d be ready to go in a second."

Reviews for The Lone Ranger have thus far been less than kind, but you never know what might happen over the next few days -- and people have definitely been known to ignore bad critical feedback when souped-up action and big explosions are the payoff, especially during the air conditioned months. Brace yourself for The Lone Ranger 2, in other words.
