'Amityville: The Awakening' Trailer May Make You Fear for Cinema

Well, it's been about 10 years since we've had an Amityville Horror sequel/reboot/spinoff in theaters, so it looks like 2015 is the year for an allegedly fresh spin on the oft-told tale of well-meaning suburbanites who make the mistake of moving into a haunted house where a crazy person once slaughtered his entire family.

This time around, it's Amityville: The Awakening, written and directed by Franck Khalfoun. The StudioCanal/TWC production, due in theaters January 2, centers on a family seeking a new home where they can nurse young James (Cameron Monaghan) through devastating injuries that have apparently left him permanently mute and immobile. Unfortunately, this also makes him a great target for the malevolent spirits dwelling in the house, who also immediately set about scaring the hell out of James' sister Belle (Bella Thorne).

You know where all this is heading -- there's a well-meaning older dude (Kurtwood Smith) who gets himself in over his head, and a cute little kid who looks extraordinarily creepy in the right setting, and also maggots. Did we mention it's coming out in January? Check out the trailer -- and count the jump scares -- in the clip below:
