'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Writers Promise Not to Get Carried Away

Amazing Spider-Man

Ever since the overstuffed mess that was Spider-Man 3, the Spidey fanboy universe has existed in a state of semi-perpetual panic regarding the storylines and/or casts of subsequent Spider-films -- and with Amazing Spider-Man 2 boasting a lineup that includes the Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and both Harry and Norman Osborn (Dane DeHaan and Chris Cooper), the potential for another round of bad-guy shoehorning seems pretty high.

But according to screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, any such worries are misplaced. Kurtzman waved off advance criticism in an interview with MTV, promising, "I think you have to go into it and say, ‘is this character essential to the story or are you just throwing him in for no reason whatsoever?,’ [and] we would never, ever, ever dare to do anything other than what felt like it was organic to the flow of the story."

Moreover, continued Kurtzman, he and Orci have given added thought to the broader scope of the franchise. As he put it, "[A] lot of consideration has been given to the structure of ['The Amazing Spider-Man 2'] so, hopefully, when you see it, you’ll get the big picture."

Screen Rant speculates that we might be witnessing the first hints of an eventual appearance by Spidey's mega-foe collective the Sinister Six, which has included a number of villains over the years (including the Rhino, as well as the Lizard and the Sandman, who popped up in the first Amazing Spider-Man) -- and if that indicates a level of ambition that's been heretofore absent from this corner of the Marvel universe, so much the better.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is scheduled to swing into theaters on May 2nd, 2014.
