Alex Kurtzman to Direct 'Mummy' Reboot

Shortly after being hired to shepherd the new "shared universe" that's being stitched together for Universal's monster movie properties, it appears as though Alex Kurtzman is just a signature or two away from getting the green light to direct the studio's upcoming reboot of The Mummy.

Kurtzman is said to be in final negotiations for the project, which is being written by Jon Spaihts. Kurtzman and screenwriter Chris Morgan, who's helping him craft the aforementioned shared universe, will co-produce.

It's still very early going, so no one's really talking plot particulars yet, but the new Mummy will reportedly be set in the present day -- and, unsurprisingly, feature none of the characters detailed in the last round of Mummy flicks, which starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.

Whatever happens, Kurtzman's got a little time: The Mummy is scheduled for release in April 2016.
