Jonah Hill told E! Online's Marc Malkin at the Academy Awards back in February that work has already begun on the 21 Jump Street sequel.

"We are writing the sequel now. We got [the greenlight] by the studio to start writing the sequel," Hill said.

Now, we know who is writing the sequel. According to Variety, Michael Bacall, who wrote the first movie, will return to pen the sequel from a treatment by both Bacall and Hill.

Curiously, Variety says the parties are nearing a deal to begin the work, but according to Hill in E!'s report, work had already started. So, who's right?

It is possible that Sony had verbally given the greenlight to start work on the sequel early and when it becomes apparent that the movie is going to do well at the box office, they're making it official by hammering out the details.

Based on the '80s TV series, 21 Jump Street stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as police officers demoted to work undercover in a youth crime unit. Their latest assignment had them infiltrating a high school to find the leader of a drug ring.

The movie is well-reviewed, with a Tomatometer of 87% at Rotten Tomatoes and is projected to make between $31-$34 million on its opening weekend.
