China Box Office: "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2" Opens to Solid (Maybe Even Great) $21M

“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny,” the sequel to Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning 2000 film, opened in China over the weekend and pulled in $21.3M. Compared to the recording-breaking numbers that Stephen Chow’s “The Mermaid” has amassed in the last couple of weeks -- $42M on opening day and $420M since -- this doesn’t sound like much.
But “Sword of Destiny’s” relatively modest weekend opening is actually a solid, maybe even great figure.

Binh just put up our new podcast last night for last weekend’s box office results.
There’s not much more that we can say about “The Revenant” or “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Sure, these two films supplanted the previous weekend’s top film “Ride Along 2,” which experienced a typical 60%-plus drop-off for a film targeted at the African-American audience.

Of the three new wide releases this weekend, horror film “The Boy” ended up being the big winner, grossing $10.8M at the box office.
The other two releases were raunchy comedy “Dirty Grandpa” and YA thriller “The 5th Wave.” Both films pulled in similar numbers, $11M and $10.3M respectively.

“Ip Man 3” is not the only Chinese film to debut last weekend in the U.S. The other is “Monster Hunt,” the highest-grossing movie of all time in China with $385M.
Directed by “Shrek” animator Raman Hui, the $56M (very expensive in China terms) fantasy adventure film only managed a measly $21K in the U.S.

Despite a winter storm that caused many theaters in the East Coast to shut down, “Ip Man 3” pulled in a solid $762K at the box office from 103 theaters in its U.S. debut over the weekend.
Its per theater average of $7,402 is the highest of all films currently playing, besting “The Revenant” and “Star Wars:

Donnie Yen did a q/a with IMDB on Twitter to promote the January 22nd release of “Ip Man 3” in the U.S.
When asked by fans about the likelihood of an “Ip Man 4,” he responded encouragingly with “very likely.” I’ve read a similar sentiment from the producer as well.
"Star Wars 8" Will Clash with "Avatar 2" in December 2017

After “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” broke the all-time box office record previously held by James Cameron’s “Avatar,” Disney no longer fears “Avatar 2.”
The studio has decided to move the release date for “Star Wars 8” from May 26, 2017 to December 15, 2017, just a week before James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel to “Avatar.”

Things Going Right for Michael Bay's "13 Hours:" Film a Success with Critics and at Box Office

During my weekly podcast with Binh Ngo, I was low on Michael Bay’s “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.”
Although Bay loves the military (its soldiers and many gadgets) and can make a highly entertaining action film, I didn’t think his fans care much about Benghazi, the subject of the film.
