A BFI Southbank season of films starring the great Jean Gabin has put a new print of this 1938 masterpiece of poetic realism back on to the big screen at lucky cinemas around the country. Raymond Chandler said that Bogart could be tough without a gun, and Gabin was France's Bogart.
